Uncharted is an action-adventurethird-person shooterplatformvideo game series developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for PlayStation consoles.

The main games in the series follow Nathan Drake, a treasure hunter who journeys across the world to uncover various historical mysteries.

The main series began with Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, released on the PlayStation 3 in 2007, followed by its sequels Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (2009), Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception (2011), with the final installment, Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, released on the PlayStation 4 in 2016. A prequel, Uncharted: Golden Abyss, was released for Sony's PlayStation Vita handheld system in 2011, followed by the card game spin-off Uncharted: Fight for Fortune in 2012. A standalone expansion to the series, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, was released in 2017, with Chloe Frazer as the game's playable protagonist.

The series has been universally acclaimed and commercially successful, having shipped more than 41 million units, making it the one of the best-selling video game franchises of all time. The main series has been widely credited by critics and video game publications for raising the standards of single-player video games, praising it for high production values, quality in storytelling, character design and animation, voice acting, realistic graphics, technical innovation, musical score, gameplay mechanics, and delivering an enjoyable cinematic gaming experience to players. The series has often been likened to Hollywood-producedactionadventure films.

According to former Naughty Dog developer, Lucas Pope, the franchise drew inspiration from the Gears of War series, with the first Uncharted game being delayed after the first Gears of War game released in order for various core gameplay and technical elements to more resemble and feel like that of the latter.[1]

The critical and commercial success of the Uncharted games have been pivotal to the success of PlayStation during the seventh and eighth generation of video game consoles, and has helped elevate Naughty Dog's reputation to a highly respected video game developer in the industry.

The Uncharted series is set in a shared real universe, and features a non-linear storyline. Each universe is considered shared with only antagonists, places, and background characters separate between them.

Drake's Fortune, the first game in the series, was released for PlayStation 3 in November 2007.[2] The system carried the following two installments of the main series, following a deal between Naughty Dog and Sony Computer Entertainment to result in exclusive release for their systems. Among Thieves was published in 2009, and the creative team were afforded a greater license to utilize a greater deal of the system's random-access memory (RAM), due to an improved propriety engine. It subsequently introduced more locales, higher free roam and combat abilities, and a larger map. Drake's Deception, released in 2011, built upon this aspect, while it also added an improved online multiplayer mode.

The following main instalment, A Thief's End, was published on PlayStation 4, and focused on realism and detail. The last in the series to feature the main protagonist, it added driving elements, as well as improving on other gameplay aspects, such as stealth and role-playing, and comprehensive upgrades to multiplayer. It was released to massive financial success, breaking multiple records.[3] A free-to-play game for iOS and Android titled Fortune Hunter was released to tie in with A Thief's End.[4][5]

Other games and compilations[edit]

Golden Abyss was published in 2011, and is the first in the series to be released on PlayStation Vita, marking the series' first on a handheld console. It is considered a prequel to the main series, although, some developers have stated that it acts as a separate, original story.[6] In 2012, a turn-based card game titled Fight for Fortune was released. It was developed by One Loop Games,[7][8] and contained interactive elements suitable for the Vita.[9]

The Nathan Drake Collection is a remastered collection of the series' first three installments, and was ported to PlayStation 4 by Bluepoint Games in October 2015. It was released to compensate for the delay in production for A Thief's End, which was originally slated for release in summer 2015. The game also included a voucher for the beta for the multiplayer for A Thief's End.[10] It received positive reviews, with most praising the technical improvements and visual enhancements.[11]

The Lost Legacy was released as a standalone expansion to A Thief's End, and marks the first entry in the series not to feature Drake. It features the characters Chloe Frazer and Nadine Ross, who previously appeared in Among Thieves and Drake's Deception, and A Thief's End, respectively.[12] It was released on PlayStation 4 in 2017.[13]

Common elements[edit]

Gameplay[edit]

During combat, Drake (left) can use corners and walls as cover, and then use blind or aimed fire from cover against his opponents.

Gameplay in the Uncharted series is a combination of action-adventure elements and 3D platforming with a third-person perspective. The player is given various physical tasks which must be completed to progress through the storyline, such as jumping, swimming, grabbing and moving along ledges, and climbing and swinging from ropes.[14] Other aspects, including shooting, combat, and puzzle solving, also regularly feature. In later titles, driving, boat riding, and other acrobatic actions were added or developed.

The Uncharted games grants a reasonable amount of freedom through the design of the maps. Later games contain elements of open world design, in order to encourage free-roaming to secure collectibles or stealth to avoid enemies.[14] In A Thief's End, role-playing was expanded to include side discussions with other characters. The Uncharted series follows the structure of traditional action games, where players complete a single track series of levels with linear gameplay, and is navigated through a third-person perspective.

Shooting is central to the game's function, as players are also required to bypass a string of foes. Although a wide variety of weapons are present in the game, the player can only carry a sidearm such as pistol, a primary weapon such as a rifle or shotgun, and a handful of grenades. These weapons are obtained by picking up weapons dropped by a downed foe, or from those scattered around the various maps. If the player dies, they will respawn at a specific level checkpoint.[15]

Uncharted 2 Full Walkthrough

In A Thief's End, the use of vehicles in an explorable environment was developed. It provides the player with unheralded freedom to take vehicles wherever they please, albeit, must be driven to a certain location to progress the story.[16]

In Among Thieves, multiplayer was introduced. It features both competitive and co-operative gameplay. The co-op multiplayer mode allows up to three players to take the roles of Drake and two other 'hero' companions and features missions involving gunfights, platforming, and teamwork-based objectives.[17] Players can also assist their comrades if they become critically injured or if they are grabbed by an enemy.[17] The competitive multiplayer allows a maximum of ten players to play against each other in two teams of five. Six competitive modes are featured, including single or team-based deathmatches, and team-based objectives.[18] In A Thief's End, survival mode was introduced, which features wave-based progression on swarms of increasingly powerful enemies, as well as completing other objectives. Furthermore, multiplayer allows players to accrue points and rank up, which can be used to purchase more skins for both heroes and villains.[18]

Setting[edit]

The Uncharted series is set in the real world, in a number of different time periods. In Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, the game is set off the coast of Panama, in the Amazon rainforest, and an uncharted island off the coast of South America.

The second entry in the franchise, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, was the first in the series to experiment with several locales. The game is set in the snow-capped mountain landscapes of the Tibetan Plateau in southernmost China, a museum in Istanbul, the jungles of Borneo, and the urban landscapes of Nepal. Subsequent games followed this concept, with Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception featuring the streets of London and Colombia, as well as a château in France, a castle in Syria, a city in Yemen, and the sprawling deserts of the Rub' al Khali. To match the past in elements of the third game, some differences in terms of buildings and geography were designed to reflect the different time periods.

Uncharted 4: A Thief's End features an estate in Italy, a cathedral in Scotland, several locations in Madagascar, and many uncharted islands in the Indian Ocean not too far off from Africa, to reflect Libertalia. Unnamed American cities are also included, in both the past and present, where the titular character resides.

Many of the locations represented were extensively researched for the series. The development team organised field research trips with tour guides and architectural historians and captured many photos and hours of video footage to properly reflect the settings.

Characters[edit]

Top to bottom: Nolan North and Claudia Black reprised their roles as the only single-player playable characters throughout the series.

The series has included a wide variety of voice actors, with the development team settling on the decision that prominent characters would be voiced by lower profile actors. Only three characters have featured in every main installment, while Chloe is the only other single-player playable character:

  • Nolan North as Nathan Drake
Nathan is portrayed as a professional treasure hunter with a shady background. He is highly intelligent, self-educated in history and various languages, and a supposed descendant of Sir Francis Drake. Naughty Dog gave Drake a very strong personality, as they did not want him to act blandly, and so, he often thinks out loud, and comments and complains on the absurdity of his situations.[19] Drake's appearance is generic, usually appearing in a plain shirt and jeans, to portray the everyman persona. North also strongly mixed in his own personality with Drake's, adlibbing portions of the character's dialog.[20]
  • Emily Rose as Elena Fisher
Elena is an investigative journalist, who often finds herself on the same excursions as Drake. They begin a relationship, and eventually marry and have a child. Naughty Dog initially designed Elena solely as a sidekick and a romantic interest to Drake, and her personality to complement his. However, she grows to be as capable as Drake at gun battles and resourcefulness.[21] Rose commented, 'In the first game, she's a lot younger, she's a lot more naive, and she looks at things as being very possible, and in the second [game], has seen murders and adventure...the way that any person grows, you see that in her. She's a little bit more hesitant, a little more cynical'.[22]
  • Richard McGonagle as Victor Sullivan
A former U.S. Marine, Sullivan is a skilled traveler, able to navigate planes and submarines. He is also able to engage in similar gun battles as Drake, and is adept at star-based navigation. Sullivan is Drake's mentor and father figure, having picked him up as a wandering orphan in Colombia. Naughty Dog also designed him to fit the everyman persona, as he clads himself in odd guayabera-style shirts, khaki pants, and smokes cigars. He is also constantly in debt, and relies on other people to funds the pair's treasure ventures.[23]
  • Claudia Black as Chloe Frazer
The only other single-player playable character, Chloe was designed to be as a darker version of the main character, and a stark contrast to Elena. She is an impulsive and reckless adventurer, and is witty, devious, and fun seeking.[24] Chloe is also a very sexually forward character, using it to help further her interests. At first, she appears selfish, caring little for anything but her goal, but is later seen as a very loyal and determined character. She is as skilled as Drake and Sullivan in gun battles and fights, while Black also adlibbed segments of dialog to influence Chloe's personality.[25][26]

Game[edit]

Uncharted: Drake's Trail[edit]

Drake's Trail is a now-defunct 2007 online game. The game was a browser-based game with alternative reality elements. Consisting of ten chapters, the story, serving as a prequel to Drake's Fortune, recounts journalist Elena Fisher hiring a private detective to track down famous treasure hunter Nathan Drake believing he is onto something big. The game was played using a Google Maps plugin to locate game areas within the real world, in conjunction with a Flash Player to explore those fictional locations (such as Drake's apartment) for clues to the next location.

Uncharted: The Board Game[edit]

Uncharted: The Board Game is a board game published by Bandai in 2012. It was designed by Hayato Kisaragi and allows between two and four players to compete for treasure and fight enemies.[27]

Motion comics[edit]

Uncharted: Eye of Indra[edit]

On October 23, 2009, Sony Computer Entertainment America released the first of a four-part series adventure called Uncharted: Eye of Indra.[28] It is a prequel to Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. The second part was released on November 25, 2009, while the third and fourth parts released simultaneously on December 7, 2009.[29]

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune[edit]

A motion comic adaptation of the prologue of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, starting with the discovery of Francis Drake's coffin and up to the first encounter with Gabriel Roman. Uses the same voice clips from the video game.[citation needed]

Comic book[edit]

On July 19, 2011, Sony announced that an Uncharted comic book would be released by DC Comics around the time Uncharted 3 came out. Written by Joshua Williamson, with art by Sergio Sandoval and covers by Adam Hughes, it was released on November 30, 2011, as part of a 6 issue mini series.[30][31] In the story, a quest for the legendary 'Amber Room' launches Nathan Drake on a journey to the center of the Earth.[32]

Uncharted: The Fourth Labyrinth[edit]

A novel released in October 2011. The novel is written by Christopher Golden and published by Del Rey Books, and follows the search for Daedalus's Labyrinth, a maze used to hold the Minotaur, a monster from Greek mythology.[33]

Film adaptation[edit]

In 2008, film producer Avi Arad stated that he was working with a division of Sony to develop the film adaptation of Uncharted.[34] In response to a question posed to Richard Lemarchand, lead game designer of Naughty Dog, on whether he would like to see a film adaptation of Uncharted, he replied 'no comment'.[35] Since then, Columbia Pictures has confirmed that an Uncharted film is being developed.

The film was at first to be written by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer and produced by Avi Arad, Charles Roven, and Alex Gartner.[36][37] As of June 30, 2009, it was confirmed that the Uncharted film had been in development for the last year-and-a-half.[38]Nathan Fillion expressed an interest in playing Nathan Drake, and started a campaign on Twitter to encourage fans to support him in the endeavor.[39] In a 2011 interview, Naughty Dog told PlayStation University how close they really were with the development of the movie and that they had trust with all who were working on it.[40]

On October 8, 2010, it was announced by Doug Belgrad and Matt Tolmach, co-presidents of Columbia Pictures, that David O. Russell had been set to write and direct the film, an action-adventure based upon the first game in the series. The film would be produced by Avi Arad, Charles Roven, and Alex Gartner.[41] Following a screening of David O. Russell's film, The Fighter, he was approached by a fan of the Uncharted series who asked whether he had considered Nathan Fillion for the role of Nathan Drake for the upcoming film due to the high number of requests for him to fulfill the role. Russell was unaware of the interest in Fillion and who he was and seemed to quickly dismiss the idea.[42]

On November 24, 2010, an interview with Mark Wahlberg was published by MTV with the actor discussing his involvement in the film adaptation of the popular franchise. He stated that David O. Russell was currently writing the script and was excited for what he had in store, hoping to shoot in the middle of 2011: 'I'm obviously in whatever David wants to do but the idea of it is so off the charts: De Niro being my father, Pesci being my uncle. It's not going to be the watered-down version, that's for sure.'[43]

On May 26, 2011, it was reported that David O. Russell had dropped out from directing the video game film, with a new screenwriter being sought by Columbia Pictures.[44]On July 6, Variety reported that Neil Burger was stepping in for David O. Russell.

Burger landed the offer after the studio and producers Avi Arad, Charles Roven and Alex Gartner sparked to his new take on the film. Burger spoke out about the film in July, saying the following:[45]

We're re-writing the script from scratch, and I'm just jumping into that literally right now, about to close the deal and leap off. Until the screenplay is written you never know who's going to be acting in it or not. But there are a lot of good actors out there who even look like Nathan Drake and who could do it. I love the project, I think it's a great adventure and it's a wild insane ride ... the game is and the movie will be. I mean it has pretty great character at its core, Nathan is a bit of a con man, a hustler ... knows his stuff, ballsy..it's great. Absolutely. And then you know you have to do what a movie does best, as well ... build on what's cool about the game and then make it into a movie. Yeah there will be (balance) in this one, this one is a very great adventure, and it's just a matter of pulling out the the [sic] very cool intense stuff that works for the film story, and making sure the story supports those elements and also makes us really connected to the character.

On August 23, 2012, Burger dropped out to work on another film and the studio hired the husband and wife team of Marianne and Cormac Wibberley to rewrite the film.[46]

In an interview with IGN, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg said they were asked to write the film multiple times, but declined all of them.[47] On February 4, 2014, Deadline reported that Seth Gordon would direct the film with the latest script being written by David Guggenheim.[48] Production was set to begin in early 2015.[49] The film was originally scheduled for release on June 10, 2016.[50] On November 12, 2014, the studio hired Mark Boal to write the film.[51] After Wahlberg, Chris Pratt was in talks to portray Nathan Drake, but he reportedly declined the offer.[52] On June 24, 2015 Seth Gordon left the project over creative differences.[53]

In April 2015, the script written by David Guggenheim was leaked, having been obtained in the Sony Pictures hack.[54] On August 5, 2015, Sony Pictures Entertainment pushed the film's release date back to June 30, 2017.[55] In an interview with Game News Official, Nathan Drake's voice actor Nolan North stated that he believed that fans did not want a movie.[56][57] Charles Roven did reveal to Collider that what they were working on was pretty exciting, there was a director that they did not have at the moment, and they were not ready to cast that vote until they were actually ready to cast.[58] In April 2016, Neil Druckmann, who had worked on previous Uncharted games, said that the most important aspect of the film is the character relationships.[59][60]

On July 29, 2016, Variety reported that Joe Carnahan will write the draft of the film's script.[61] On September 1, 2016, the film was removed from Sony's release calendar due to not having a director or cast, but Sony was still moving forward with the film.[62][63] Director Shawn Levy on October 25, 2016 was announced to be directing the Uncharted movie.[64] Carnahan said to Collider that he and Levy are knowledgeable about the game, and had been hard at work getting the characters right.[65] The filming was set to begin in early 2017.[66] Wahlberg told We Got This Covered in an interview that he was no longer attached to the film.[67] In early January 2017, Carnahan posted a photo on his Instagram to show that the script of the film had been completed.[68][69][70]Tom Holland will star as young Nathan Drake and the movie is a prequel to the games.[71] TV writer Rafe Judkins was brought on to rework the script.[72] On December 19, 2018, it was announced that Levy had stepped down from directing the movie.[73] On January 14, 2019, Variety reported that Dan Trachtenberg had signed on to direct the film.[74]

On March 29, 2019, The GWW reported that Chris Hemsworth, Matthew McConaughey, Chris Pine and Woody Harrelson are on the shortlist for Sully.[75] On June 6, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that the movie is set to release on December 18, 2020, with Tom Holland set to star as Drake.[76] On August 22, 2019, Deadline reported that Dan Trachtenberg had exited the film, with the film scheduled to go into production in early 2020. The film will become the first feature production of Sony PlayStation Productions.[77] On September 27, 2019, The Hollywood Reporter has reported that Travis Knight will direct the film.[78]

Fan film[edit]

In July 2018, director Allan Ungar posted a fan-made 15-minute short film, starring Nathan Fillion as Nathan Drake, who for years had been campaigning for the role. It was very well received, with particular praise given to Fillion's performance as Drake, and to an action sequence shot from an over-the-shoulder angle, similar to the shooting sequences in the video games. The short also features Stephen Lang as Victor Sullivan and Mircea Monroe as Elena Fisher, with appearances from Ernie Reyes Jr. and Geno Segers.[79][80] The reception towards the fan film has resulted in some speculation as to whether it is expected to influence and alter the plans of the official film. Druckmann, vice president of Naughty Dog, tweeted a heart emoji towards the fan film, with Shawn Levy also praising it,[81] while Ungar expressed his support towards the official film.[82]

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is an action-adventurevideo game developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. It is the second game in the Uncharted series, and was released in October 2009 for PlayStation 3. Set two years after the events of Drake's Fortune, the single-player story follows Nathan Drake, who partners with Chloe Frazer and Elena Fisher, as they search for the Cintamani Stone and Shambhala, whilst battling a mercenary group led by Zoran Lazarević and Harry Flynn.

Development for Uncharted 2: Among Thieves began immediately following the critical and commercial success of the first entry.[1] The development team drew inspiration from explorer Marco Polo, and specifically, from his expeditions through archipelagos and eastern Asia. Naughty Dog also aimed to improve the game's proprietary engine, creating the game to run exclusively on the company's Naughty Engine 2.0 system. This allowed the developers to record extensive motion capture and more in-game cinematic sequences, as well as include an online multiplayer component; a first for the series.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves received universal acclaim from game critics upon release, with praise directed toward its elaborate set pieces, character design, storytelling, graphics, technical innovation, and improved gameplay mechanics. It received Game of the Year accolades from numerous publications and award events, and is considered to be one of the greatest video games ever made, and among the most significant titles for the seventh console generation. It also enjoyed great commercial success, with over six million copies sold worldwide. The game was then followed by a sequel titled Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception in 2011, and was re-released on PlayStation 4 as part of Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection.[2]

Gameplay[edit]

Drake climbs a hotel in Nepal as he attempts to locate a temple.

Uncharted 2 is an action-adventureplatformvideo game played from a third-person view, with the player in control of Nathan Drake. Drake is physically adept and is able to jump, climb, and scale narrow ledges and wall-faces to get between points. Drake can be equipped with up to two firearms – one single-handed and one two-handed – and a limited supply of grenades. Drake can pick up weapons, automatically replacing the existing weapon he was using, and additional ammunition from slain enemies. The player can direct Drake to take cover behind corners or low walls using either aimed or blind-fire to kill his enemies. The player can also have Drake fire while moving. If Drake is undetected by his enemies, the player can attempt to use stealth to take them out, such as by sneaking up behind them to knock them out with one hit, or by pulling an unsuspecting foe over a ledge from which Drake is hanging.[3] In most areas, if all of the foes patrolling are killed stealthily then other waves that would normally appear do not. Some areas of the game require the player to solve puzzles with the use of Drake's journal, which provides clues towards the puzzles' solutions. When enabled, a hint system provides gameplay clues, such as the direction of the next objective.

Throughout the game are 101 special treasures that may be hidden or in difficult-to-reach places that the player can collect. There is also one secret 'hidden' relic exactly the same as the one in Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. Collecting these treasures, along with completing certain feats within the game, is tracked by the awarding of medals, which gives the player in-game money to use to unlock extra content on the disc, including concept art, game movies, and game cheats such as guns with infinite ammunition. A large portion of the in-game medals are used to award trophies.

Multiplayer[edit]

Uncharted features both competitive and co-operative multiplayer. The co-op multiplayer allows a maximum of three players to take the roles of Nathan and two other 'hero' companions and features missions involving gunfights, platforming, and teamwork-based objectives.[4] Players can also assist their comrades if they become critically injured or if they are grabbed by an enemy.[4]

The competitive multiplayer allows a maximum of ten players to play against each other in two teams of five. Six competitive modes are featured: Deathmatch, Plunder, Elimination, Turf War, King of the Hill and Chain Reaction.[5] Deathmatch features two teams of five, with one team acting as heroes and the other as villains. Players can choose their own appropriate character models (such as Nathan, Elena, Sully and new characters Tenzin and Chloe for the heroes team). As players accrue points and rank up, they can purchase more skins for both heroes and villains.[5] Players can select two Boost abilities which assist them in the matches.[5] Plunder is similar to the traditional capture the flag game mode, and sees each team attempt to capture the treasure from a central point in the map and return it to their base; the player carrying the treasure is slowed down a great deal, and may also choose to hurl the treasure away at any point, in order to keep it out of reach of the enemy, or to pass it to a teammate.[5] Elimination has two teams of five players against each other with the objective of killing everyone on the other team. In Elimination, the players do not respawn. The goal is to eliminate the other team three out of five times.

Chain Reaction is a mode that is similar to Turf War. This has the player capturing posts, but the player must do them in a specific order – one team works out from their base needing to capture 1 through 5 while the other team starts out from their home and needs to snag 5 through 1. King of the Hill has players capturing a hill, spawned on the map to score points. They must stay in the hill to score points while the enemy team tries to do the same.

Gold Rush is a cooperative mode of play where 2–3 players must team up to obtain a treasure, which is randomly spawned on the map, and take it back to their base, much like Plunder. However, AI enemies try to stop the players from returning the treasure. If a player goes down and is not revived before the timer goes out, they will not come back until the next round. In each consecutive round the enemies become tougher to defeat. Survival is the second cooperative mode of play, where 2–3 players must work together to defeat a total of ten waves of enemies, each wave becoming more and more difficult. A new co-op game mode, titled 'Siege', was also added, in which 2–3 players must team up to secure a zone while holding off waves of enemies.

On 5 June, 2019 the developer Naughty Dog announced that the multiplayer servers of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves would be terminated on 3 September.[6]

Plot[edit]

Explorer Nathan Drake (Nolan North) is approached by his former associate Harry Flynn (Steve Valentine) and Flynn's girlfriend Chloe Frazer (Claudia Black) to help steal a Mongolianoil lamp connected to Marco Polo's doomed 1292 voyage from China. The group plans to cheat Flynn's client and take Polo's treasure for themselves. Unbeknownst to Flynn, Chloe convinces Nate, her ex-lover, to leave with her once they get their shares. Nate and Flynn break into a museum in Istanbul and find the lamp. It contains a map and flammable resin that illuminates a message, revealing that Polo's fleet was shipwrecked in Borneo, and that it was carrying the Cintamani Stone, a massive sapphire from the fabled city of Shambhala. Taking the map, Flynn double-crosses Nate, leaving him to be arrested.

Three months later, Chloe helps free Nate with his longtime friend Victor Sullivan (Richard McGonagle). She reveals that Flynn is working for Zoran Lazarević (Graham McTavish), a Serbian war criminal seeking the stone. Nate and Sully infiltrate Lazarević's camp in Borneo, with Chloe in Lazarević's group as a mole. Nate discovers that the stone never left Shambhala, and locates the temple where Polo's crew slaughtered each other. Nate finds a phurba and a map with a message that its carrier will gain passage to Shambhala through a temple located in Nepal. Nate and Sully escape after being found by Flynn and his men.

Sully backs out, so Nate and Chloe continue to Nepal, which has been ravaged by Lazarević's mercenaries in search of the temple. They encounter Nate's ex-girlfriend journalist Elena Fisher (Emily Rose) and cameraman Jeff (Gregory Myhre) tracking Lazarević. At the temple, Nate and Chloe use the phurba as a key to uncover Shambhala's location in the Himalayas. After Jeff is shot in an ambush, Chloe insists on abandoning him; Nate and Elena help him but are caught by Lazarević. Chloe switches sides to maintain her cover while Lazarević kills Jeff and gets the Shambhala location from Nate, who escapes with Elena.

Elena is skeptical about helping Chloe, but helps Nate catch up to Lazarević's train via a stolen jeep. Nate fights through the train to find Chloe, but she refuses to leave with him after he compromised their mission to help Jeff and Elena. Flynn arrives and shoots Nate. Cornered, Nate causes an explosion that derails the train over a cliff. He escapes the hanging train car, recovers the phurba, and falls unconscious. A TibetanSherpa, Tenzin (Pema Dhondup), brings Nate to his village and helps him recover.

Nate reunites with Elena and is introduced to an old German explorer, Karl Schäfer (René Auberjonois). Schäfer sends him and Tenzin after the remains of Schäfer's failed expedition for the stone decades ago. Nate and Tenzin travel through ice caves, fighting off strange monsters on their way to an ancient temple. They discover that Schäfer was working for the NaziAhnenerbe and killed his men to protect the world from the Cintamani Stone. They return to fight off an attack on the village by Lazarević's men, but Schäfer is kidnapped with the phurba. Elena and Nate follow Lazarević's convoy to a monastery, where the mortally wounded Schäfer warns Nate to destroy the stone before Lazarević can obtain its power.

Nate reconciles with Chloe and reacquires the phurba. He and Elena unlock the secret passage to Shambhala underneath the monastery, but Lazarević corners them. With Chloe's cover blown, Lazarević threatens her and Elena, forcing Nate to help open the pathway to Shambala. The monsters attack but are killed by Lazarević, who reveals them as Shambala's disguised human guardians. After the gate is opened, more guardians attack, allowing Nate, Elena and Chloe to escape.

After making their way through the city to the main shrine, the group discovers that the Cintamani Stone is a giant amber derived, along with the flammable resin, from the sap of a prehistoric tree of life in the center of the city. It makes the drinker nearly invincible, explaining the mutated guardians and Polo's doomed crew. Flynn, left for dead by Lazarević for his failures, ambushes them in a suicide attack, seriously wounding Elena. Nate leaves her in Chloe's care and confronts Lazarević at the base of the tree. Lazarević drinks the tree sap, becoming nearly invincible. By shooting explosive pockets of resin near Lazarević, Nate defeats him and leaves him to be killed by the guardians. As the city crumbles under the collapse of the tree and the exploding resin, Nate and Chloe carry Elena to safety.

In the village, Chloe counsels Nate to tell Elena that he loves her, before bidding him farewell. Sully leaves a recovering Elena to Nate. The couple pay their respects at Schäfer's grave and kiss.

Development[edit]

First revealed by Game Informer in December 2008, the first teaser trailer shows a weary, wounded Nathan Drake marching through a snowstorm to reach a phurba half-buried in the snow. Lead character artist Richard Diamant remarked that the trailer was rendered in real-time, using the game's engine.[7] A second teaser trailer was released soon after, showing a badly wounded Drake stuck in the remains of a wrecked train hanging precariously over a cliff. The story begins in medias reswith this opening. The narrative opens with a quote attributed to Marco Polo, 'I did not tell half of what I saw, for I knew I would not be believed.'

The game had three main writers: head writer Amy Hennig, Neil Druckmann and Josh Scherr.[8]

Uncharted 2 features an online multiplayer component; Naughty Dog hired a dedicated multiplayer designer in August 2008 to work on this aspect of the game.[9] The beta phase of the multiplayer was playable by those who bought early copies of the game inFamous.[10] The beta was also accessible by annual subscribers of the PlayStation Network service, Qore, on June 3, to those who had subscribed to Qore by May 15.[11] The beta codes from Qore began to be sent out on May 8, 2009. Beta codes from inFamous shipped inside the game's packaging, on May 26, 2009. On September 15, 2009, another beta was released and an open beta was released to the EU and US on September 29, 2009, via the PSN store. Both expired on October 12, 2009.[12] In the first year since the game's launch, more than 125 million matches and 10,500 man-years had been played online.[13]

On July 27, Naughty Dog Co-President Christophe Balestra revealed through a Twitter post that the game would not require installation to the PlayStation 3's hard drive.[14]

The development period was 22 months, with six months of the total spent in pre-production.[9]

One of the inspirations for the Tibetan village sequence was the 2008 video game The Graveyard by Tale of Tales.[15]

Motion capture[edit]

In E3 2009 videos from Naughty Dog showed the voice actors of the characters performing the motion captures in some of the scenes.[16] The actors act out the scene wearing specially designed motion capture suits. Their performance was used to provide both the motion capture and voice work. The actors would even rehearse together in a room and had discussions with the creative directors of the game before carrying out the performance to create the highly realistic and cinematic dialogue throughout the game.[17]

Graphics and technology[edit]

Naughty Dog intended to maximize the utilization of the Cell's SPUs, as their estimates for utilization in the first Uncharted were only around 30%.[18] As a result, the game has more realistic environments and animations. Uncharted 2 has 564 in-game cinematic animations in comparison to 80 in Uncharted: Drake's Fortune.[9]

Uncharted 2 uses Naughty Engine 2.0, a revamped and optimized version of the original engine that has allowed the game to have real-time moving environments, more realistic textures, and animations. The Naughty Dog Game Engine 2.0 also works in harmony with Havok Physics.

On August 26, 2009, it was revealed that Uncharted 2 uses between 90 and 100% of the Cell's processor and uses all 25GB of a single Blu-ray Disc.[19] However, Evan Wells later pointed out:

... now it's at least busy 100% of the time, but it's still not fully-optimized code. I mean, in order to get to that 100%, it was more about making sure the pipeline was filled, and we weren't running into one of the processors becoming idle because there wasn't a job ready for it.[20]

In the interview, Christophe Balestra also pointed out how important it is to ship every system with a hard drive.

The fact that every PlayStation 3 has a hard drive is huge for us. It's the combination of Blu-ray and hard drive. You can play the entire game without loading. We don't require an install. We're doing all the post-processing effects on the Synergistic Processing Units.

Screen Space Ambient Occlusion for example, was done completely on the SPUs.[19][21]

Post-release[edit]

Special editions[edit]

Naughty Dog's creative director Amy Hennig revealed a special Fortune Hunter edition of Uncharted 2 that is not obtainable in stores. The Fortune Hunter edition contains the game, a replica of the Phurba Dagger artifact and stand, a BradyGames strategy guide, an art book, the official soundtrack, and a collector's case autographed by Naughty Dog. It is also said to include various downloadable content.[22] A collector's edition of Uncharted 2 was not announced for sale in the United States.

SCEA marketing manager Asad Qizilbash told readers of the PlayStation Blog that the limited edition giveaways will take place on that blog, PlayStation Home, the game's multiplayer demo, and a few other unnamed places. Qizilbash also mentioned that only residents in the US are eligible to win. Only 200 copies were released.[22]

Exclusive to the PAL region, the Uncharted 2 special edition contains the game, gold versions of the Beretta and AK-47 weapons, two post cards, a PlayStation 3 theme, and multiplayer skins.[23] The game comes packaged in a steel case by SteelBook. Never formally announced, the Special Edition was discovered on the game's official European launch site, with the only link for the special edition leading to one of Britain's major game retailers, Game.[24]

A Game of the Year Edition was released October 12, 2010. Among other features, this edition includes all previously released downloadable content (with the exception of the Sidekicks Skin Pack),[13] four motion comics, and Pinball Heroes: Uncharted for the PSP.[25] Besides being available as an individual 'Greatest Hits' title, Uncharted 2 and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune have been released together, as a 'Greatest Hits DualPack', and an 'Ultimate Combo Pack' which includes a metallic blue DualShock 3 controller.[26][27]

Downloadable content[edit]

The first pack of downloadable content (DLC) was released on November 27, 2009 and featured a new multiplayer map, 'The Fort', from The Fortress chapter in Drake's Fortune for free.[28] On December 11, 2009, 'Uncharted: Eye of Indra Multiplayer Skin Pack' was released, exclusively for the PAL PlayStation Store. It includes all four parts of the motion comic Uncharted: Eye of Indra and two Uncharted 2 multiplayer skins based on the motion comic. The pack contains Rika for the heroes and Pinkerton for the villains. The pack was later released in North America.[29]

On January 28, 2010, the 'PlayStation Heroes Skin Pack' was released, containing Sev and a Helghast soldier from Killzone 2, Nathan Hale and a Chimera from the Resistance series, and Cole (Evil and Good) along with Zeke from inFamous. The single player demo of Uncharted 2 was released on the same day.[30] On February 25, 2010, a DLC pack that contained two new multiplayer maps, six skins based on Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, 12 PSN Trophies, and 13 medals was released. Skins were released as a single purchase and the 2 maps with the 12 PSN Trophies were released as a single purchase. A bundle of both purchases was also released.[31] On April 22, 2010, the third expansion pack, 'Siege' was released. This DLC pack contained a new co-op multiplayer mode known as Siege, two new multiplayer maps, six new character skins and 11 PSN Trophies (10 of which are bronze, one of which is silver). Two of the six new skins are from Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and the other four are new and exclusive to the game.[32] On August 26, 2010, the 'Sidekick Skin Pack' was released, containing 6 alternate appearances of previously available characters, and 2 new villain skins, Dillon and Mac.[33] On September 7, 2010, it was announced that new DLC for the game is on the way. On December 12, 2010, the previously exclusive 'Golden Guns' DLC was released. This DLC pack contained gold skins for the AK-47 and Beretta weapons.[34]

PlayStation Home[edit]

In PlayStation Home, the PlayStation 3's online community-based service, Naughty Dog has released a themed game space for Uncharted 2, developed by Outso.[35] This makes the second game space to be released from Naughty Dog, the first being the game space for Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. This space is called 'Nepalese Village' and features the mini-games Mask Mayhem, Torch Race, and Fortunate Thieves with rewards. There's also an Uncharted 2 Blog that lets users access the Uncharted 2 blog. It was released on October 23, 2009 in the European and North American versions of PlayStation Home.[36] In the video on the PlayStation blog, Jack Buser, the director of Home for SCEA, describes the mini-game, Fortunate Thieves, as being a 'full on, interactive mini-MMO.' The Uncharted series is the first game series to have a game space for both games of the series in Home.

Between the hours of 8 am PT on November 5 and 12 pm PT on November 6, there was a contest in the North American Home (in which only U.S. citizens could participate), where users could win the Uncharted 2: Among Thieves – Fortune Hunter Edition. Between those times, users went to the Uncharted 2 space and played the 'Mask Mayhem' mini-game. The user who placed first on the Uncharted 2 space's leader board won a copy of the Fortune Hunter Edition.[37] Users had another chance to win the Fortune Hunter Edition in the Uncharted 2 space between the times of 8 am PT November 20, 2009 and 12 pm PT November 21, 2009. Between those times, users had to try to get in first place on the 'Fortunate Thieves' mini-game leader board to win the Fortune Hunter Edition.[38] The user who placed first on the Fortunate Thieves leader board won the Fortune Hunter Edition. Users had one final chance to win the Fortune Hunter Edition from 8 am PT December 18, 2009 to 12 pm PT December 21, 2009. Users had to play the 'Torch Race' mini-game and be first on its leader board in the Uncharted 2 space.[39]

On May 6, 2010, an Uncharted apartment was released in the European and North American versions of PlayStation Home called the 'Uncharted Fortune Hunter's Apartment'.[40]Uncharted themed costumes have also been released in Home. The apartment was released on May 27, 2010 in the Asian version.

PlayStation Official Magazine – UK2nd best PS3 game of all time[61]

Uncharted 2

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves received universal acclaim, being praised as one of the best video games of all time, and earning numerous 'Game of the Year' awards, including Spike'sVideo Game Awards.[62] The game has a GameRankings score of 96.43%.[63] The game also received a Metacritic score of 96 out of 100,[41] making it the most critically acclaimed game of 2009.[64]

The first publication to review Uncharted 2 was the French edition of PSM3. In their review, they called the game 'Long, visually stunning, deep and explosive, Uncharted 2 combines all the qualities you can find in a videogame, and more! A new milestone has been reached in the videogame history.' The magazine awarded the game 21/20, a score that was reached five years prior by Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.[58]PlayStation: The Official Magazine awarded the game a perfect score. In their review, they stated, 'Forget Game of The Year. This is one of the greatest games of all time!'.[55] The UK edition of the magazine also gave the game a perfect score,[56] named it the 2nd best PS3 game of all time,[61] while readers of the same magazine voted it the greatest PlayStation title released.[65]

Hiawatha Bray of The Boston Globe said:

... no video game has ever done a better job of capturing the style and rhythm of the movies. The action sequences in Uncharted 2 look as if they were shot by a team of cinematographers, then edited into a coherent and thrilling narrative. The game's storyline is trite, but a first-rate cast of voice-over actors carry it off with flair.[66]

The Los Angeles Times review suggested the game would 'fit better on a big screen in some multiplex', and also added that 'Uncharted 2 is ridiculously immersive, so much so that you forget you are controlling the actions of treasure hunter Nathan Drake ... everything is done right.'[67] In a review for The New York Times, Seth Schiesel described it as 'perhaps the best-looking game on any system, and no game yet has provided a more genuinely cinematic entertainment experience.'[68]

Uncharted 2 also received praise from other developers. Battlefield: Bad Company Two producer Gordon Van Dyke stated 'Uncharted 2 is an amazing-looking game. But we're reaching that level of quality. It's going to be hard for any game to be able to make a claim that they look better ... to even be close, to me is quite an honour as a developer. The one thing I did was, when I looked at their game I was like, damn them! What have they done to the rest of us? I was looking for something where I could say, okay, that we're doing better.'[69]

IGN gave the game a 9.5 out of 10, praising its 'stunning visuals' and saying 'Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is fantastic', and calling the multiplayer mode 'one of the best multiplayer experiences that you'll find in any game around ... it almost feels like Naughty Dog has given us an extra game for free.'[54]X-Play's Adam Sessler gave the game a 5 out of 5, saying that 'Uncharted 2 has the best single-player I have ever played'.[70]

The game was criticised for some negative issues, such as lapses in the control system. The New York Times noted that '... its finicky controls can frustrate at times.'[68] Tom Bramwell of Eurogamer found, 'There are ... a few occasions where the platforming lets you down ... despite the feeling you were jumping in the right direction.'[45] IGN described certain repetitive gunfight sequences as 'a little aggravating' and complained about the 'very linear' climbing sections, yet calling it a forced complaint.[54]

The game was placed 19th in Dengeki online's reader poll of the best games of 2009, making it the only non-Japanese game in the list.[71]

Sales[edit]

NPD Group's sales data show that Uncharted 2 was the top-selling game in the United States for October 2009, at about 537,000 units sold,[72] while Media Create's sales data has Uncharted 2 selling 47,000 units for its first day in Japan.[73] Phil Rosenberg of SCE says the game has crossed the one million sold mark on November 12, 2009.[74] According to gaming analyst Jesse Divnich, Uncharted 2 is the third first-party title on the PlayStation 3 to sell over 1 million units in North America.[72][75] As of February 2010, the game has sold over 3.5 million copies worldwide, becoming the fastest selling first-party title on any PlayStation platform.[76]Uncharted 2 is now part of Sony's selection of Greatest Hits.[77] On 28 September 2010, Naughty Dog announced the title had now sold 3.8 million worldwide.[78] By December 2011, over 5 million copies of the game had been sold.[79] As of March 2015, Uncharted 2 has sold over 6 million copies.[80]
